The Canadian National Exhibition runs through Labour Day — in fact, Labour Day Monday is traditionally one of the CNE’s busiest and most festive days, marking the official end of the fair.
This year the CNE runs August 21 to September 7, 2026 — and 2026 is a particularly special year. It will be one of the last opportunities to see the Canadian Forces Snowbirds perform, as the iconic aerobatic team is scheduled to retire their fleet in the coming years. The Canadian International Air Show runs September 5–7 over the Labour Day weekend — the Snowbirds performing over Lake Ontario is one of those genuinely spectacular Toronto experiences worth planning around.
Beyond the Air Show, the CNE has its usual massive lineup:

The Toronto Islands are at their best in late August and early September. The summer crowds have thinned slightly from peak July levels, the water is at its warmest, and the weather is usually perfect — warm but not punishing.
Take the ferry from the Jack Layton Ferry Terminal at the base of Bay Street — it’s a 15-minute ride and one of the best free views of the downtown skyline you’ll ever have. Once on the islands:

The Air Show is one of the most spectacular free spectacles Toronto offers. The planes fly over Lake Ontario and are visible from a huge stretch of the waterfront — from Harbourfront all the way to the Beaches. You don’t need CNE admission to watch from the waterfront, though being inside Exhibition Place gets you closer.
This year’s Air Show includes the Canadian Forces Snowbirds — one of the last scheduled performances before the team retires their aging CT-114 Tutor jet fleet. If you’re a fan of aerobatics or Canadian aviation history, this is the one to catch.
Best viewing spots without CNE admission: The stretch of waterfront from Harbourfront Centre to Coronation Park, and anywhere along the Beaches boardwalk to the east.
Two of Toronto’s most iconic neighbourhoods at their absolute best on a long weekend. Kensington Market closes its streets to cars on the last Sunday of each month for Pedestrian Sunday — and Labour Day weekend often coincides with or falls near this event.
Kensington Market — vintage shops, international street food, independent boutiques, coffee shops, and the best neighbourhood energy in the city. On a warm September Sunday afternoon it’s close to perfect.
Chinatown — one of the largest in North America, running along Spadina Avenue. Excellent restaurants, bakeries, bubble tea, and produce markets. Grab dim sum for brunch or pho for lunch and spend an hour browsing.
Both neighbourhoods are free to explore and best experienced on foot.
The Distillery District is a beautifully preserved Victorian industrial complex in the east end of downtown — now home to galleries, boutiques, excellent restaurants, and some of the city’s best coffee.
On a Labour Day weekend afternoon, the cobblestone laneways and covered outdoor spaces make it ideal for a wander. The Evergreen Brick Works Farmers Market runs every Saturday morning at 550 Bayview Avenue — one of Toronto’s best markets, set in a beautiful ravine location.
Local produce, artisan food vendors, excellent coffee, bread, cheese, preserves — and the unique setting of the Brick Works itself, a heritage industrial site now transformed into a community and environmental centre. It typically runs until 1pm.

Go on Sunday to avoid the Monday crowd surge, and book any restaurant reservations in advance — Niagara-on-the-Lake fills up quickly over Labour Day weekend.
For a more relaxed escape, Prince Edward County — about 2.5 hours east of Toronto — is Ontario’s wine and culinary heartland. Vineyards, farm-to-table restaurants, beautiful beaches on Lake Ontario, and an arts scene that’s been quietly building for a decade.
The County is busiest in summer but genuinely enjoyable over Labour Day weekend. Book accommodation well ahead — it sells out months in advance for long weekends.

Amsterdam BrewHouse — right on the waterfront near Exhibition Place, great beer, great views. Expect a crowd.

Stackt Market — on Bathurst near the waterfront, an outdoor market with food vendors, bars, and container-shop retail. Good Labour Day afternoon energy.
Ossington Avenue — Toronto’s best strip for independent bars and restaurants. Most have patios and the neighbourhood has great foot traffic on long weekends.
Leslieville — the east end neighbourhood of Queen Street East between Broadview and Leslie is one of Toronto’s most pleasant areas for a casual afternoon patio session. Less touristy than King West, equally good food.
