The Teams: What’s at Stake
Ghana — The Black Stars
Ghana are back at the World Cup for the fifth time, and the pressure is on. Their greatest moment on the biggest stage came in 2010, when they reached the quarter-finals in South Africa — famously halted in heartbreaking penalty shootout fashion against Uruguay. Since then, they’ve been knocked out at the group stage in both 2014 and 2022.
This campaign feels different. Ghana are blending veteran leadership — captain Jordan Ayew anchoring the side — with an explosive, energetic new generation. Their coach Carlos Queiroz has assembled a squad with genuine pace and firepower.
Players to watch:
Antoine Semenyo — The Manchester City forward had an outstanding season, winning the Premier League Player of the Month award in February and scoring the winning goal in the FA Cup Final. He is Ghana’s most dangerous attacking weapon and will be the name on everyone’s lips heading into June 17.
Iñaki Williams — The Athletic Club captain stretches defences with his relentless running and added end product this season with three goals and six assists in La Liga. With Semenyo alongside him, Ghana have one of the most electric forward pairings in the tournament.
Lawrence Ati-Zigi — The goalkeeper will be crucial. Ghana are winless and without a clean sheet in their last seven outings heading in, so Ati-Zigi’s form between the sticks is a key factor.
For Ghana, this is the match that sets the tone for the entire campaign. In a group featuring England and Croatia, a win against Panama in the opener could be the difference between progressing and going home early.
Panamá — Los Canaleros
Panama are making their second-ever World Cup appearance, having debuted in Russia 2018. They have yet to win a match on football’s biggest stage and arrive in Toronto with one mission — to change that.
Coach Thomas Christiansen has built a resilient, well-drilled side that is hard to break down. In five pre-tournament friendlies, Panama recorded two wins, two draws, and one defeat — with a 4-2 win over the Dominican Republic showing their attacking potential, offset by a heavy 6-2 loss to Brazil.
Players to watch:
Ismael Díaz — Panama’s most dangerous forward. The Club León striker scored a first-half hat-trick against Jamaica at the 2025 Gold Cup, proving he can punish any defence that goes to sleep.
José Fajardo — A creative spark in midfield and attack who links play for Panama. His ability to find pockets of space could trouble Ghana’s defensive shape.
Anibal Godoy — The experienced midfielder is Panama’s heartbeat. His ability to control tempo and break up play will be central to any Panamanian game plan.
This is the most winnable match in Group L for Panama — and they know it. Expect a fired-up, passionate side desperate to make history on the big stage.
Head-to-Head
Here’s a fun fact: Ghana and Panama have never faced each other competitively before. June 17 in Toronto will be their first-ever meeting on the international stage. No history, no grudges — just two sides going at it with everything to play for. Pure football.
Getting to Toronto Stadium on Match Day
Address: 170 Princes’ Blvd, Toronto, ON M6K 3C3 (Exhibition Place, western waterfront)
Best Way to Get There: Public Transit
Driving on match day is strongly discouraged. Transit is faster, cheaper, and far less stressful.
GO Train (Best option): Take the GO Lakeshore line to Exhibition GO Station — it sits directly next to Exhibition Place and is just a 2 to 5 minute walk from the stadium gates. Trains run frequently from Union Station.
TTC Streetcar: The 509 Harbourfront and 511 Bathurst streetcar routes both stop within walking distance of the stadium. Cost is just $3.35 — compared to $40-80 for parking, if you can find a spot.
From the Airport: Take the UP Express from Pearson Airport to Union Station, then connect via GO Train or streetcar to the stadium.
Pro tip: Plan to travel at least 90 minutes before the 7pm kickoff. Security screening at major international matches can take 45+ minutes. Arriving early isn’t optional — it’s essential.
Driving & Parking
If you must drive, come from the Gardiner Expressway, exit at Dufferin Street, and follow signs to Exhibition Place. Parking is extremely limited and expensive. Your best move is to park at a GO station outside the city and take the train in.
Rideshare drop-offs and pick-ups are directed to designated zones along Jefferson Avenue or Strachan Avenue, north of the rail lines.
Stadium Know-Before-You-Go
Bag policy: Bags must not exceed 30×20×15 cm. Clear bags are easiest. Full backpacks will be turned away — not checked, turned away. Travel light.
Food and drink: Outside food and drinks are not permitted past the gates. Important tip: eat before you go. The restaurants along King West, Liberty Village, and King Street near Exhibition Place are significantly better and cheaper than anything inside the stadium. Eat a proper meal before kickoff, grab drinks inside.
Capacity: The stadium has been expanded to 45,000+ seats for the World Cup through temporary upper-tier stands added specifically for the tournament.
Tickets: All official tickets are exclusively through fifa.com. Do not buy from unofficial channels.

Match Prediction
Ghana enter as slight favourites. With Semenyo and Iñaki Williams up front, the Black Stars have the pace and quality to trouble any defence. Panama will be organized and difficult to break down, but Ghana’s individual quality and the motivation to start the group stage with three points gives them the edge.
Both teams know this is the match that shapes their entire World Cup campaign. In a group with England and Croatia, neither side can afford to stumble here. Expect intensity, passion, and a crowd that will make BMO Field electric.
